Barcelona hero Andres Iniesta gives his take on Liverpool Fc Premier League title debate

The Premier League is in unprecedented territory amid the coronavirus outbreak as football has been put on hold with Liverpool top of the table and no clearcut idea of what to do next

Barcelona hero Andres Iniesta has weighed in with his opinion on the debacle that surrounds the Premier League.

Liverpool sit top of the table, 25 points clear of Manchester City and on the brink of winning the competition.

It would be the first Premier League title the club has won and the first league title in 30 years.

However, the coronavirus crisis has seen football put on hold.

Furthermore, it is becoming more and more pressing an issue that the next season could be affected.

There have been calls to null and void the season and start from scratch but that would not leave too many clubs happy.

Liverpool are the obvious ones with woe but sides in the relegation zone will also not be allowed to decide their future.

And teams vying for a spot in Europe will also have their fates taken out of their hands.

Cancelling the season is the last thing most teams want to do.

But with the country on lockdown for at least another three weeks, some action will have to be taken at some point.

And even Barca legend Iniesta has waded into the debate.

“I suppose there will be rules that decide one way or another in exceptional circumstances, but it’s a difficult situation,” HITC quote him as saying when asked about Liverpool’s chances of being given the Premier League title.

“It must be very hard [for teams like Liverpool].

“Or a second division team on the verge of being promoted, told this season is null and void, that it doesn’t count.

"Or, the other way round: a team in the relegation zone is saved. I don’t know how you resolve it.”

In Iniesta's native Spain, the situation is also muddled - though a tough plan has been brought forward.

It has been reported that the current occupiers of the Champions League spots will get their prize and play in the competition next season.

That would be hard to swallow for Atletico Madrid - who knocked Liverpool out - as they currently sit outside the top four.
