Transfer: AC Milan Eyeing Up Possible Move For Chelsea’s Defensive Ace, Should The Blues Look To Sell?

According to a recent report by Italian news source CalcioMercato, Chelsea centre-half Andreas Christensen has been the subject of some interest from the Serie A, with San Siro based AC Milan said to be keen on his services. The report suggests that the Italian club are on the lookout for a ‘reliable’ centre-half to partner up with Italian international Alessio Romagnoli.

The report suggests that Milan have identified Christensen as one of the options, especially considering that the two clubs have a fairly positive relation. Although the Serie A outfit have rejected various Chelsea approaches for Romagnoli’s signature, they are said to be hopeful of signing the young Dane in the summer.

The report further claims that the Italian club had a bid rejected by the Blues for the youngster in January and that they instead went for a budget option in Simon Kjaer.

How Has Andreas Christensen’s Season Been At Chelsea?

The young centre-half has had to deal with a couple of slight injuries along the course of the campaign, owing to which he’s missed at least five fixtures. Despite this though, it must be conceded that the defender has looked composed and confident whenever called into action by Frank Lampard. Having played in 15 league games since the start of the season, the Danish international seemed to have nailed down a place in the first-team before the league itself was suspended.

Although the start of the season wasn’t easy for him to take, the youngster clearly worked extra hard in training to break into the team. Despite the presence of some high-quality defenders at his disposal, Lampard has been quick to identify Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen as his two best options in the role. Although there haven’t been too many faultless displays by the Chelsea defence this season, it’s safe to say that their better ones have all been with Christensen on the pitch.

Why The Blues Can’t Afford To Sell Christensen This Summer?

Chelsea acquired the youngster from Danish club Brondby IF on a free transfer in the summer of 2012. Having begun life as part of the Blues’ under-18s, the centre-half’s development into a top player was rapid. The Dane made a name for himself in the European scene during his loan spell at Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach. His 82 fixtures for the German club yielded an impressive seven goals and an assist as well.

Now very much a regular in the Chelsea team, the 23-year-old is undoubtedly a better player than some of the other defenders that are currently at Stamford Bridge. French defender Kurt Zouma started the campaign in decent form but has since shown his fragility on various occasions. Fikayo Tomori, on the other hand, still displays an alarming lack of experience against the bigger clubs. Christensen has been around the Stamford Bridge environment for quite a while now, and given the Blues’ current circumstances, keeping him in West London must become one of Lampard’s priorities for the summer transfer window.
