Chelsea and Liverpool fans excited over what Timo Werner did in transfer audition against Tottenham

After scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the first leg of RB Leipzig's two Champions League round of 16 wins over Tottenham Hotspur, fans of Chelsea and Liverpool took a closer look at Timo Werner

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner turned on the afterburners against Tottenham Hotspur in his side's Champions League round of 16 win to keep Chelsea and Liverpool fans keen on his potential.

The 24-year-old did not score at home to Spurs but did set up the first of Marcel Sabitzer's two goals as Jose Mourinho saw his side fall behind to a 3-0 deficit on aggregate before Emile Forsberg made it 4-0 late on.

He did score the only goal of the first leg (a 1-0 win in north London) and found the back of the net only for VAR to chalk off his strike for offside.

And while the Germany international had an unhappy time in front of goal back in his homeland, shooting high or wide during the game, he continued to get himself into good positions using his speed to breeze through the visitors and their defence.

Both Chelsea and Liverpool have been linked as suitors to Werner in recent months, with the Bundesliga forward offering something a bit different to their current options up front in Tammy Abraham and Roberto Firmino, respectively.

While Frank Lampard's favoured front man does not lack for speed, he is arguably a striker who prefers to be more involved in the build up of moves, and can play with his back to goal at times.

Firmino, on the other hand, plays like a midfielder redeployed to the front in many ways. He has been described, accurately, as a true 'false nine' and is key to how Liverpool play.

By bringing in a straight-line speedster like Werner both clubs would be getting something very different, and on social media fans of the two Premier League clubs called for him to be signed.
