Signing James McCarthy would give Aston Villa a stupidly-good midfield

It looks like Aston Villa might want James McCarthy.

According to The Daily Mail, Aston Villa have joined West Brom in the race for the out-of-favour Everton midfielder.

But if Villa can win that race then it's a deal that will make other Championship sides very jealous.

Not only because the Everton man is a tried-and-tested Premier League player, but because it would also undeniably give Dean Smith the best midfield in the division.

Smith already has a brilliant John McGinn and Jack Grealish, and adding McCarthy into the mix would give the Villans a stupidly-good midfield trident and no other Championship team can boast that.

The Republic of Ireland international, signed by Everton for £13 million in 2013 [The Independent], has had his fair share of injury problems, but he's still only 28 and the West Midlands side could get some very good years out of him yet, fitness permitting.

The same probably can't be said for Grealish, who might be destined for bigger and better things in the long term, but even McGinn and McCarthy is a midfield pairing that trumps most second-tier teams - if not all of them.
